Semrush's 2026 AI Visibility Index, published on June 26, 2026, analyzed 126 million US prompts from January to April 2026 across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews, covering more than 1,200 brands in 22 industries. Only 36 brands, which Semrush calls the Universal 36, stayed in the top 100 most-mentioned brands on every platform in every month. On Gemini, the overlap between brands mentioned and domains cited was as low as 30%.
Why it matters for your business
Two habits die here. The first is the blended AI visibility score, the single number that averages your standing across every assistant. If only 36 of more than 1,200 tracked brands, names like YouTube, Amazon and Home Depot, stay consistently visible across four platforms, an average is hiding your actual position rather than summarizing it, and the engine where you are absent is invisible in the number by construction. Track per engine or do not track.
The second habit is treating a mention as a citation. A 30% overlap on Gemini means the assistant is often willing to say your name while linking somebody else, and those are different problems with different fixes: being named is a brand and corpus problem, being cited is a page and structure problem. Find out which one you have before you commission the work to fix it.
