OpenAI said on August 31, 2026 that ChatGPT ads had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days, with tens of thousands of advertisers in more than 40 countries. Ads began as a US test on February 9, 2026 for logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers, and passed $100 million in annualized revenue within about six weeks. OpenAI places ads at the bottom of an answer, clearly labelled and separate from it, and says they do not influence what ChatGPT answers.
The timeline
- February 9, 2026. Ads test begins in the US, for logged-in adults on Free and Go.
- March 26, 2026. The pilot passes $100 million in annualized revenue, with more than 600 advertisers, CNBC reported. Fewer than 20% of eligible users saw an ad on a given day.
- May 2026. Ads Manager opens the platform to small and medium-sized businesses, which OpenAI now says are a material share of the business.
- August 31, 2026. OpenAI announces a $1 billion run rate, and self-serve buying opens across Europe, India, the Middle East and North Africa.
A run rate is current monthly revenue multiplied by twelve, not revenue already booked. At $1 billion that is roughly $83 million a month, as Digiday noted. The speed is the story, not the total.
Why it matters for your business
OpenAI's design keeps the answer itself unpaid: ads sit below it, labelled, and the company says they do not change what ChatGPT recommends. That makes the organic answer more valuable, not less. The answer is the one part of the screen a competitor cannot buy, and the ad slot directly under it is now open to anyone with a budget, including the competitor the answer did not name.
If ChatGPT recommends you, a rival can still place an ad under that recommendation. If it does not, the rival can buy the slot under an answer that names neither of you. So the order of work for a business is the same as before, with higher stakes: earn the answer first, then decide whether paid placement is worth adding on the questions you already win.
Keep the two separate in your reporting. A brand that counts ad impressions in ChatGPT alongside organic mentions will see its visibility number rise for reasons that have nothing to do with whether the assistant actually recommends it.
